OSJ – update on community projects

Fostering Cultural Leadership Through Music
OSJ’s Community Engagement Initiatives

2019 thus far…

  • Displaced Voices (January) – connected the voices of young migrants at the Oxford Spires Academy to their communities through poetry and music

Afghan Women’s Orchestra Oxford Residency (March) – a seven-day cross-cultural collaboration with Afghanistan’s first all-female orchestra, OSJ, Oxfordshire County Music Service, local community members and the University of Oxford

Ongoing…

  • Online Distance Lessons – OSJ musicians teach students at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music
  • Rhythm & Signs community music workshops in Oxford which create cohesive group improvisations through hand signals

Music for Autism – hundreds of relaxed concerts a year for autistic children, adults and their carers

Looking ahead…

  • Heart to Heart Orchestra (September 2020) – Young autistic musicians from South Korea play side-by-side with OSJ musicians in Dorchester and London
  • Continuing to build new partnerships and projects in Oxfordshire and beyond
