OSJ residency at SJE Arts – Orchestra of St John's | Taking classical music out into the community

OSJ residency at SJE Arts

OSJ at SJE Arts

In 2021, during lockdown 3, the OSJ Proms series moved to SJE Arts. We were sorry to leave the Ashmolean Museum, their home for six years. We have since built up a loyal audience at this new venue.

SJE is a larger venue and can more easily accommodate socially distanced audiences.

Travel and parking

St John the Evangelist church is situated on Iffley Road, between Marston Street and James Street, opposite the University Sports Ground. It is a 10-minute walk from Magdalen Bridge.

Buses from central Oxford
Bus No. 3 travels up Iffley Road, stopping directly outside the church (James Street stop).

Buses Nos. 1, 5 and 10 stop in the Cowley Road (James Street stop), from where it is a short walk along Marston Street to Iffley Road and SJE.

Buses from Oxford Railway station
Bus No. 5 travels up Cowley Road, stopping between James Street and Marston Street (James Street stop). It is a short walk along Marston Street to Iffley Road and SJE.

Oxford-London coach service

Oxford Tube runs frequent services to and from Oxford Bus Station and London Victoria Station, with additional stops in both cities. In Oxford, the St Clement’s stop is an 8-minute walk from SJE.

Parking

Parking in central Oxford is limited and the public are encouraged to use the Park and Ride system. The shuttle from Thornhill Park and Ride stops in St Clement’s.

If coming by car, there is a small public car park at the bottom of St Clement’s and another behind Tesco Metro in Cowley Road. Limited on street parking is available on Iffley Road after 6.30pm and there are a few places in the nearby side streets.

For some events we offer car parking in a private car park close to the church. The charge is £10 per car. For information, please email concerts@ssho.ox.ac.uk

About SJE church and St Stephen’s House

The Grade I listed church of St John the Evangelist was designed by Victorian architect George Frederick Bodley as a place of worship for an Anglican religious order, the Society of St John the Evangelist.

St Stephen’s House is an Anglo-Catholic theological college.

Plain chant was an important part of worship and the design and simplicity of decoration of the church reflects this need with a superb acoustic. Especially good for choral, the space works well for almost every kind of performance.

Great friends Glazunov and Tchaikovsky both conjured the changing of the seasons in these two delightful works inspired by the Russian autumn. Gifted young performer Elodie Chousmer-Howelles performs Glazunov's awe-inspiring Violin Concerto, and the evening is rounded off with Tchaikovsky's much-loved Nutcracker Suite.

The fourth concerto is Beethoven in his most jovial mood but also contains the drama we associate with this composer. On first listening it sounds like a concerto that a virtuoso could just dash off with the usual élan but on closer inspection it is far more difficult to bring off than one could imagine.
The ‘Linz’ is a grandly inventive work that Mozart made in such a hurry. For the first time, he begins a symphony with a slow introduction, declamatory at the outset, then yielding and full of pathos, and cannily creating suspense.
