Diversity and Inclusion
We have always wanted “the best to be available for all”. Our mission is to “bring music to people of all ages and from all walks of life”, which we’ve worked to do through our Connections programme and Music for Autism, as well as our concerts. Nevertheless, we recognise that we need to do more.
For this reason, we are developing a Diversity and Inclusion strategy which will involve a larger group, especially those from a wider ethnic background or at a socio-economic disadvantage.
We are aware that these groups are under-represented within classical music for complex reasons, and that we cannot solve this alone or in the short term. We will collaborate with other organisations where appropriate. However, there are some areas that can be improved within our organisation and this work is underway.
We have been reviewing the following with the aim of finding ways to increase racial diversity:
- Board, senior management, administration
- Musicians
- Artistic programme
- Venues
- Audiences
- Communications
We have undertaken an external audit (I’M IN, Music Masters) and made changes in response where possible. We recognise the importance of training, and will provide it within and outside our organisation.
Our artistic programme already includes works by composers of diverse ethnic backgrounds and we are committed to continuing with this. Historically under-performed works will be introduced to the audience to help give them the attention they deserve.
We also wish to encourage children and young people of colour to consider a career within classical music. We will do our part to facilitate this by developing links with the local schools’ music service and music conservatoires and by providing performance opportunities for talented musicians.
The development and delivery of our Diversity and Inclusion plan will be a continuous process, and we welcome your feedback.
