Richard Strauss Opening of Capriccio
Alexander Borodin String Sextet in D Minor
Johannes Brahms Sextet No 2 in G Major
Six principals from the Orchestra of St John’s Smith Square have formed a string ensemble to perform some of the bigger chamber works. The sound is lush, verging on the orchestral, with two cellos, two violas and two violins giving depth as well as breadth to the music. It’s a combination which is less common than the conventional string quartet, but the greatest composers have all composed works for sextets, some of which are right up there among the most satisfying chamber music ever written.
The programme brings three of the best works written for sextet.
