» Sally Matthews at Music in the Abbey 2008 in Dorchester
Internationally acclaimed soprano Sally Matthews returned to the Music in the Abbey festival where she performed Strauss's beautiful Four Last Songs and Brahm's German Requiem on Sunday 14 September 2008, as part of the weekend-long music festival, now in its eleventh year, at Dorchester Abbey in Oxfordshire.
Other concerts in the series included on Friday 12 September, two favourite string pieces: Vivaldi's Four Seasons and Richard Strauss's Metamorphosen for 23 solo strings. On Saturday 13 September, Stephen Stirling performed Strauss's First Horn Concerto; other pieces included Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture and his joyful Italian Symphony.
Over the years, the Orchestra of St John’s Music in the Abbey festival has presented programmes of music from the baroque to the present-day and has featured guest artists including Sally Matthews, Michael Collins and Tasmin Little.
This year we also held another of our popular Come and Sing events. Amateur choral singers joined our conductor John Lubbock for a three hour workshop on Saturday 13 September from 10am until 1pm.
Please do send us your thoughts on the weekend's festival by email to orchestra@osj.org.uk.
