OSJ Offstage
Being at the heart of the community is the Orchestra of St John's top priority. The Orchestra has had a long and varied history of community engagement, working with its outstanding musicians to deliver innovative, creative and highly successful education projects.
|
Come & Sing and Come & Play are participatory workshops where children and adults, supported by musicians from OSJ and directed by our conductor, John Lubbock, rehearse repertoire which is later performed by the Orchestra and its choir, OSJ Voices, in a public concert. These give both invaluable insight into the process of rehearsal to performance and offer a unique opportunity to play or sing alongside professional musicians for an afternoon. To find out about the next of these events, go to Forthcoming Events. |
|
Music for Autism and Moving Music are specially tailored concerts aimed at involving autistic children and their families and dementia patients and their carers in the live music making experience. They offer stimulation and enjoyment to all, in whichever way is appropriate, in a safe and supportive environment. Musicians from the Orchestra, led by our Artistic Director, John Lubbock, perform a variety of classical favourites and lighter sing-along pieces in special schools, day care centres and small venues around the country. To find out how to get involved with these projects, please contact Alexandra Loewe. |

Taster Days - small ensembles of string or woodwind and brass give a short recital and then split into groups to demonstrate their instruments to primary school children to encourage them to take up a musical instrument in school. These Taster Days have run at our partner school Eltham College, but can be carried out at any school, or other venues hosting festivals or events. If you are interested in having OSJ perform a Taster Day at your school or centre, please contact Alexandra Loewe. |

Masterclasses -
Principal players of the Orchestra give an individual lesson to 5 or 6 advanced students in front of an audience of parents and other students. This has taken place at our partner school Eltham College and can be carried out at other venues. Masterclasses are also a regular feature of our Music in the Abbey Festival, when a world-class soloist is booked for the concerts. |
We aim to engage and enliven audiences both in the concert hall and in every community setting where the music making experience can be communicated. Programmes around our concert activity involve young people, elderly, disadvantaged and those unable to attend conventional art venues in very specific, life-enhancing creative interaction.
If you have a project you would like to see happen, or know an organisation who would like to hold a musical event of this kind for their members, then please get in touch. We are happy to tailor projects to your requirements, please contact Alexandra Loewe to discuss the possibilities. |
